UNDRO

The United Nations Disaster Relief Organization ( UNDRO , German  Organization of the United Nations for Disaster Relief ) was an organization of the United Nations .

UNDRO was founded in 1971 and was based in Geneva . One of the directors was Mohammed Essaafi .

With the establishment of a Department for Humanitarian Affairs ( DHA , Department of Humanitarian Affairs ) of the UN Secretariat by the Secretary General , on the basis of UN Resolution 46/182 , with effect from April 1, 1992 , UNDRO was incorporated. The DHA had offices in Geneva and New York . One of the directors (Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator ) was Yasushi Akashi .

As part of a reform program in 1998 , the DHA was reorganized and transformed into the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA ) of the UN Secretariat. The scope of duties was expanded to include the coordination of humanitarian aid, the development of principles and procedures, and humanitarian advocacy.
