Simushir ( Russian Симушир ; Japanese 新知 島 , Shimushiru -tō ) is an uninhabited volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean , which geographically belongs to the central group of the Kuril Islands and thus politically to the Sakhalin Oblast of Russia .

The island is 59 km long, 12 km wide and has an area of around 227.6 km². The elongated island is formed by a series of several volcanoes. Listed from northeast to southwest are:
- Urataman , the 678 m high Somma volcano on the northeast tip of Simushir. Its caldera, 7.5 km in diameter, is partly in the sea.
- Prewo , 1360 m high stratovolcano .
- Sawarizkogo , last eruption in 1957; up to 624 m high; Nesting of 3 calderas with diameters of 10, 8 and 3 kilometers; the crater lake is around 40 m high.
- Milna , 1539 m high Somma volcano in the extreme southwest of the island and its highest point.
- Gorjaschtschaja Sopka , last outbreak 1918; 891 m high stratovolcano located northwest of the Milna.
history
The island was first settled by the Ainu in the 19th century. The island was ceded in the Treaty of San Francisco in 1952. Previously, she was part of the Shimushiru-gun , sub-prefecture Nemuro , Hokkaido Prefecture , Japan . At the time of the existence of the Soviet Union , the island was used for military purposes. At the north end of the island there is a former submarine base.
