Somma volcano

A Somma volcano (or a Somma-type volcano ) consists of a caldera with a volcanic cone at its center. It is named after the stratovolcano Monte Somma in southern Italy , in whose summit caldera the cone of Vesuvius has formed.

A large number of Somma volcanoes can be found on the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands to the south .

Aerial view of Fogo (Cape Verde Islands), as an example of a Somma volcano. The volcanic cone of Pico do Fogo is 100 m higher than the walls of the surrounding caldera .
