Overview volcanoes Nicaragua |
The Cosigüina also Cosegüina is a stratovolcano in the western part of Nicaragua . It forms an extensive peninsula into the Gulf of Fonseca . The summit caldera has a diameter of 2 by 2.4 kilometers and is 500 meters deep. On the bottom is the crater lake Laguna Cosigüina . The volcanic cone grew in an older Somma , which is not yet completely covered on the north side.
On January 22nd, 1835, the most violent eruption in Nicaraguan history was observed, ashes of which were found 1,400 kilometers away in Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica. The ashes darkened the daylight within a radius of 150 kilometers. In 2002 there was an accumulation of earthquakes near Cosigüina. As a result of hydrothermal activity, gas bubbles rise temporarily in Lake Cosigüina and there is a hot spring on the eastern flank. The uniform growth of the crater indicates the absence of gas leaks.
