The Monte Somma is an old volcano near Naples in Italy with a height of 1,132 m. After the near-surface magma chambers collapsed in AD 79, a large caldera with a diameter of about four kilometers was created, in which a new volcanic cone formed, the still active and 1,281 m high Vesuvius (Italian: Monte Vesuvio ).
