Awos ( Russian Авось , Japanese Aboshi ), also Avos , is a group of rock islands in the northern group of the Kuriles . Administratively they belong to the Severo-Kurilsk Raion in the Russian Oblast of Sakhalin . The islands are located 20 km southwest of Makanruschi in the Sea of Okhotsk . The rock island group was named after the Russian corvette Awos .
The rocks represent the remains of a stratovolcano is -Kegels defined by a tsunami washed away. The highest rock, Skala, protrudes 35 m above sea level. Under the water it is connected to four other rock islands, which reach heights of 7.2 to 15 m, as well as the 300 m distant rock Chokake and a shallow reef northeast of it.
Steller's sea lions , cormorants , guillemots and seagulls can be observed on the rocks .
