European Cup Winners' Cup 1987/88

The 1988/89 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 29th edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 33 club teams from 32 countries took part, including defending champions KV Mechelen , 21 national cup winners and 11 defeated cup finalists (FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Roda JC Kerkrade, Derry City, FC Avenir Beggen, FC Floriana, Glenavon FC, Vitória Guimarães, Dinamo Bucharest, Dundee United, Inter Bratislava and Sakaryaspor). Clubs from England were still excluded from participation after the Heysel disaster .

DFB Cup winners Eintracht Frankfurt from Germany, FDGB Cup finalists FC Carl Zeiss Jena from GDR , ÖFB Cup winners Kremser SC from Austria and Cup winners Grasshopper Club Zurich from Switzerland were at the start.

In the final in the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, FC Barcelona won their third title in the cup winners competition after 1979 and 1982 with a 2-0 win against Sampdoria Genoa.

The top scorer was the Bulgarian Christo Stoitschkow from ZFKA Sredez Sofia with 7 goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the higher number of goals scored away ( away goal rule ) decided. If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
