Luca Pellegrini (born March 24, 1963 in Varese , Italy ) is a former Italian football player . He was active for most of his career for Sampdoria Genoa and won numerous titles with the club at national and international level.
Career
Luca Pellegrini, born on March 24, 1963 in Varese in Lombardy , northern Italy , began playing football for the local club FC Varese , where he first attended the youth department and was accepted into the professional squad in 1978. Luca Pellegrini, who played in the position of defender, played his first season in Italy's second division, Serie B , at FC Varese . From this, however, the former first division had to relegate as bottom of the table with only 24 points from 38 season games. Playing in Serie C1 the following season , Luca Pellegrini developed into a regular player at FC Varese and was one of the most important players in reaching the championship in Girona A with three points ahead of Rimini Calcio . Through his performances in Varese, the scouts of higher-class clubs became aware of Pellegrini, including those of Sampdoria Genoa . In the summer of 1980, the talented defender left his hometown club and moved to Sampdoria in Serie B.
With Sampdoria, Luca Pellegrini first played for two years in the second highest Italian division, before being promoted to runner-up behind Hellas Verona in the 1981/82 season . Similar to Verona , Sampdoria Genoa showed a very positive development in the years after the rise. In the following years a very successful team developed under the coaches Eugenio Bersellini and Vujadin Boškov . In 1985, 1988 and 1989 Luca Pellegrini won the Coppa Italia , the Italian football cup , three times with Sampdoria Genua, where players such as Gianluca Vialli , Roberto Mancini and Pietro Vierchowod were active at the time . 1986 they reached the final again, but were subject to AS Roma . At the time, Luca Pellegrini was an absolute regular in the successful Sampdoria Genoa team. He made a total of 275 league games for the Genoese between 1980 and 1991 and scored four goals in it. He was the captain of Samp's team that won the European Cup Winners' Cup in the final against RSC Anderlecht on May 9, 1990 at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg . The year before, Sampdoria Genoa was captain with Luca Pellegrini in the final of this competition, but lost to the Spanish top club FC Barcelona . Luca Pellegrini celebrated his greatest success as a player in Sampdoria Genoa in 1991. He was the captain of the team from Sampdoria, which won the first and only championship for the club in 1990/91 as the first in the Serie A table . The last championship game, the 3: 3 on the last matchday at Lazio Rome , what the last competitive game of Luca Pellegrini for Sampdoria Genoa. At the height of his career, the defender left the club and went to first division promoted Hellas Verona.
At Hellas Verona, Luca Pellegrini could not build on the performances from times at Sampdoria Genoa. With the Italian champions from 1985, he immediately relegated to Serie B, played there second class for another year, but clearly missed the direct rise as twelfth in the table. Then Pellegrini, now thirty years old, changed clubs again and joined Ravenna Calcio , also playing in Serie B. With Ravenna, however, he had to accept relegation to Serie C1. After he had completed every single season game in Serie B 1993/94 for Ravenna Calcio, Luca Pellegrini signed a new contract with Torino Calcio in the first division for the 1994/95 season . There he was under contract for a year, but could not establish himself as a regular player. After fourteen appearances in the Serie A league in 1994/95 , Luca Pellegrini ended his active career as a football player at the age of 32. After the end of his football career, Luca Pellegrini worked as a co-commentator and expert on Italian television.
