In 2000 the team reached the play-offs for Serie B , but failed in the semifinals at AS Cittadella . 2004 Varese had to relegate again from the 3rd division, but more serious than the sporting failure were economic problems that were so serious that the FC Varese could not register for the game.
In July 2004 a successor club called AS Varese 1910 was founded, which was allowed to start in the 6th division ( Eccellenza ). Start-up difficulties meant that the club could not win its group. Because of his sporting merits in the past, he was nevertheless able to move up to Serie D.
