Pietro Anastasi (born April 7, 1948 in Catania , † January 17, 2020 in Varese ) was an Italian football player .

Career

The 1.72 m tall center forward Pietro Anastasi began playing football at his Sicilian hometown club Massiminiana Catania . As a 17-year-old, he made his Serie D debut there and scored 18 goals in 31 games in 1966, after which the Serie B club Varese FC took him over. With Varese he rose to Serie A in the first year and was appointed to the squad of the Italian national team for the 1968 European Football Championship in 1968 . Here he made his first international match alongside Luigi Riva in the final against Yugoslavia in attack . The first final ended 1: 1 after extra time and had to be repeated. In the second game, Riva first scored the 1-0 and Anastasi increased to 2-0 in the 33rd minute. Italy could no longer take the European championship title.

After the successful EM in 1968, Anastasi moved to the league primus Juventus Turin . In his first season he scored 14 goals for Juve . Although Anastasi was one of the most successful goal scorers at Juve, there were no further national team successes. He played his only World Cup tournament at the 1974 World Cup in Germany , where he came on for Giorgio Chinaglia in the first game against Haiti , scored a goal and then played the other two preliminary round matches from the start. But Italy was eliminated after a 2-1 defeat against Poland .

Pietro Anastasi joined Inter Milan from Juve in 1976 . At that point, however, he was no longer the most successful goalscorer of previous years. After three years at Ascoli Calcio from 1978 to 1981, he ended his career at FC Lugano in 1982 . In total, he made 338 Serie A appearances and scored 105 goals.

Anastasi died in January 2020 at the age of 71.
