Ernesto Castano (born May 2, 1939 in Cinisello Balsamo (MI) ) is a former Italian football player .
Castano is one of the many great defenders in the history of Italian football and, along with Giancarlo Bercellino , formed a legendary center- back duo at Juventus Turin in the 1960s .
Career
In the club
Ernesto Castano started his career with his hometown club, Balsamese. In 1956 he moved to AC Legnano in Serie B , where he was already a regular at the age of 17. The following season he again played in the second division with US Triestina .
In 1958 Castano was signed by Juventus Turin , for whom he made his Serie A debut on November 22, 1958 against AS Bari . At the age of just 20 years he was able to celebrate winning his first Italian championship with Juve in the 1959/60 season . Until 1962 Castano was mostly only a substitute, from the 1962/63 season he became a regular player in the defense and formed a legendary central defense together with Giancarlo Bercellino . Castano played a total of 335 games in the dress of Juventus Turin and scored two goals, he was able to win the championship and the Coppa Italia three times .
Ernesto Castano retired from Lanerossi Vicenza in 1971 at the age of 32 .
In the national team
Ernesto Castano made his debut in the national team on November 29, 1959 in a 1-1 draw against Hungary in Florence .
After that, over eight years passed until his second international match. Nevertheless, he was of Ferruccio Valcareggi in the squad of the Squadra Azzurra for the 1968 European Championship appointed in their own country, the semi-finals against the USSR and in the first final against Yugoslavia in the square and was European champion.
His last of a total of seven international matches for Italy was played by Castano on March 29, 1969 in a 2-2 draw against the GDR in Berlin .
