The Stadio Franco Ossola (1935–1950 Stadio del Littorio ) is a multi-purpose stadium with an athletics facility and a cycle track in the northern Italian city of Varese ; near the border with Switzerland in the region of Lombardy . The AS Varese 1910 occurs here at his home games. The sports facility has a capacity of 9,925 seats. For safety reasons, it was only permitted for 5,761 visitors last season.
history
The municipal stadium, which opened in 1935, had up to 23,000 seats at its peak. In 1950 the sports facility was named after the football player Franco Ossola , who began his career at what was then FC Varese. He had died a year earlier in the Superga plane crash . The playing field made of natural grass is on the one hand surrounded by a five-lane athletics track, which can no longer be used. On the other hand, a 446-meter-long concrete cycle track called Velodromo Luigi Ganna runs around the playing area. In 1971 it hosted the World Track Cycling Championships .
After AS Varese rose to Serie B in 2010 , the stadium was renovated for around 680,000 euros for the 2010/11 season . So was z. For example, the capacity has been increased to 7,500 seats, the required turnstiles and video surveillance have been installed at the entrances and exits, the changing rooms and the press stand have been renewed and rooms have been set up for doping tests.
The multi-purpose hall Palasport Lino Oldrini with 5,300 seats in the u. a. Concerts are held and the Pallacanestro Varese basketball team plays its home games.
