The Shikotsu-Tōya National Park ( Japanese 支 笏 洞 爺 国立 公園 , Shikotsu Tōya Kokuritsu Kōen ) is a national park on Hokkaidō . The national park founded on May 16, 1949 extends over an area of 994.73 km². The national park is classified with the IUCN protection category II. The Japanese Ministry of Environment is responsible for the management of the national park.
Park area
The park area is divided into three separate areas. These include the areas around the two eponymous caldera lakes Shikotsu and Tōya and a third area around the stratovolcano Yōtei .
Flora and fauna
The mixed forest in the national park serves as a habitat for a large number of animal and plant species.
