The Oshima Peninsula ( Japanese 渡 島 半島 Oshima-hantō ) is the southernmost part of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . The peninsula is bounded by the Sea of Japan to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east .
It is not precisely defined where the peninsula begins. In general, a line is drawn between Suttsu on the Sea of Japan and Oshamambe on Uchiura Bay ( 内 浦 湾 Uchiura-wan ). This roughly corresponds to the area of the sub-prefectures of Oshima and Hiyama . The terrain is mountainous and volcanic. The main places are Hakodate , Hokuto , Esashi , Matsumae , Kikonai , Setana and Yakumo .
Towards the southern end, the Oshima Peninsula divides into the Matsumae Peninsula pointing to the southwest ( 松 前 半島 Matsumae-hantō ) and the Kameda Peninsula pointing to the southeast ( 亀 田 半島 Kameda-hantō ). These are located opposite the Tsugaru and Shimokita peninsulas on the main island of Honshū across the Tsugaru Strait . Okushiri Island is located off the west side of the peninsula .
