The center of the city of Yamanashi is located on Fuefuki in the northeastern foothills of the Kofu basin (Kofu bonchi) east of Kofu . Since the re-establishment in 2005, the urban area in the north extends to the prefectural border of Yamanashi and includes the headwaters of the Fuefuki and some 2000s of the Kantō and Chichibu Mountains (Kantō / Chichibu sanchi) . The 2475 m high Kobushigatake rises on the northern border of the city at the "three-prefecture corner" Yamanashi / Saitama / Nagano in the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park .

Yamanashi is west of Tokyo , south of Nagano , north of Shizuoka and east of Nagoya .

history

In 1954, the towns (- chō ) Kusakabe ( 日下 部 ; northern city center) and Kanoiwa ( 加納 岩 ; southern city center) and the villages (- mura ) Yamanashi ( 山 梨 ; in the southwest ) joined in the district of East Yamanashi ( Higashi-Yamanashi-gun ) ) Yawata ( 八幡 , in what was then northwest), Iwade ( 岩手 , in what was then North), Goyashiki ( 後屋敷 ; the east) and Hikawa ( 日川 ; in the south) to the first [independent] city Yamanashi (Yamanashi-shi) together . The current city of Yamanashi was created in 2005 in a "new founding merger " ( shinsetsu gappei ; formally a new community is created, even if it is of the same name as one of the forerunners) of the old city of Yamanashi with the [district] city of Makioka ( 牧 丘 ) above the confluence of the Tsuzumi-gawa upstream and the village of Mitomi ( 三 富 ) on the upper reaches of the Fuefuki.
