The Chichibu Tama Kai National Park ( Japanese 秩 父 多 摩 甲 斐 国立 公園 , Chichibu Tama Kai Kokuritsu Kōen ) is a national park in Japan that extends over four prefectures. Originally called "Chichibu Tama National Park" after the Tama region as the western part of Tokyo Prefecture and the Chichibu region with the Okuchichibu Mountains , the name was expanded in 2000 to include the old province name "Kai" of Yamanashi Prefecture .

description

The national park with a north-south extension of 40 km and an east-west extension of 67 km offers pure nature on the edge of Tokyo, which invites you to hike. Since the mountain ranges have long been natural borders between the provinces of Musashi (now Tokyo and Saitama ), Shinano (now Nagano ) and Kai (now Yamanashi ), they are now united in a park that extends over four prefectures. In contrast to many other Japanese national parks, the area has no volcanic origin, but is made up of granite and other rocks.

The park has a series of mountains over 2000 m, a multitude of passes and deeply cut valleys. An example is the densely wooded ridge with the Kobushi-ga-dake ( 甲 武 信 ヶ 岳 ; 2475 m). Its name comes from the fact that the mountain lies on the provincial triangle Kai ( 甲 州 ), Musashi ( 武 州 ) and Shinano ( 信 州 ). Other landmarks have names that are partly Buddhist or Shinto. They are:

  • Kokushi-ga-dake ( 国 師 ヶ 岳 ; 2593 m), "Kokushi" is a high priestly title,
  • Mizugaki-yama ( 瑞 牆 山 ; 2330 m),
  • Kimpu-san, also Kimpōsan ( 金 峰山 ; 2599 m),
  • Daibosatsu-rei ( 大 菩薩 嶺 ; 2056 m), "Daibosatsu" = "Great Saint",
  • Mitsumine-san ( 三 峰山 ; 1101 m) and
  • Mitake ( 御 岳 ; 929 m) with the Musashi Mitake shrine.

In the Tamba Valley ( 丹波 谷 ), the Nishizawa Gorge ( 西 沢 渓 谷 ) is known for its azaleas and autumn leaves. A number of rivers, including the Tamagawa and its tributary Akigawa, have their origin in this area. There are also two reservoirs, Lake Chichibu and Lake Okutama.
