Beth Fowler (born November 1, 1940 in Jersey City , New Jersey ) is an American actress . She gained fame through her appearances on Broadway and as sister Jane Ingalls in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black .

Life

Beth Fowler began her career as a school teacher. Since she was fascinated by Broadway, she decided in 1970 to apply for a casting for the musical Gantry . She was hired as part of the choir as well as an understudy, but after just one performance, Gantry on Broadway was reinstated. Her next role was in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music . This was followed by appearances in the stage version of Peter Pan , Sweeney Todd and as Madame Pottine in the world premiere of Beauty and the Beast in April 1994. The Broadway adaptation of Beauty and the Beast was the first stage version of a Disney film and ran for more than 13 years until it was canceled in July 2007.

In the world premiere of The Boy from Oz in October 2003, Fowler played the mother of Peter Allen with Hugh Jackman in the lead role. She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress for her appearances in Sweeney Todd and The Boy from Oz .

In 1991, in addition to her stage career, Beth Fowler began a career as a film actress, mostly as a supporting actress. So she played one of the nuns in the choir in Sister Act - A Heavenly Career and the sequel Sister Act 2 - In Divine Mission . From 2013 to 2016, Fowler starred in seasons 1 to 4 of the Netflix series Orange is the New Black in the role of sister Jane Ingalls . In 2015 and 2016, she and the cast of the series received two Screen Actors Guild Awards in the category Best Acting Company in a TV Series - Comedy .

Beth Fowler has lived in New Milford since 2000 . She previously owned properties in Rutherford , Teaneck , Hawthorne, and Glen Rock .
