career

René Angélil began his career as a pop singer in Montreal in the 1960s, forming the pop-rock group The Baronets with childhood friends Pierre Labelle and Jean Beaulne . The band had successful titles such as C'est Fou, corn c'est Tout (a cover version of the Beatles -title Hold Me Tight ) during the short period when in Quebec French versions of English original songs from the UK and the USA have had great success. After the band broke up, Angélil and his best friend Guy Cloutier began working as managers for other artists.

Together they accompanied the careers of Québec entertainers René Simard and Ginette Reno . In 1981, Angélil and Cloutier separated to work alone as managers. At the end of 1981 (soon after the replacement as manager of Reno), Angélil heard a demo tape from Celine Dion and took responsibility for its management. In 1987 and 1988 he received the Félix Award as "Manager of the Year".

In July 2008, Angélil was appointed director of the fourth season of the Star Academie casting show , which went on air in February 2009.

Blackmail attempt

Angélil was accused by Yun Kyeong Kwon Sung of sexually molesting her in a Las Vegas hotel in 2000 . The local police investigated and Angélil finally paid the plaintiff in an out-of-court settlement; However, he never admitted the allegations, but always emphasized that the payment was made to keep negative publicity away from his wife Celine Dion. Yun and her husband Ae Ho Kwon were arrested for attempted extortion against Angélil in 2003 and sentenced in 2005 (unproven rape allegation). In early 2008, the Nevada Supreme Court overturned the extortion and conspiracy ruling but upheld the jury's ruling on attempted extortion. The court found in its grounds of judgment that the couple should have had an opportunity in the criminal proceedings to produce evidence of rape by Angélil.

Defamation Actions

In 2001, Angélil and Celine Dion filed a $ 5 million lawsuit against the Quebec tabloid Allo Vedettes , which claimed in an article that the couple had exclusively rented the swimming pool at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for $ 5,000 for privacy and to be able to sunbathe and swim uncovered. The two vehemently denied these allegations, but later withdrew their lawsuit on the grounds that priorities had shifted in the face of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .

Gambling

Angélil was an avid poker player ; In 2005 he qualified for the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions and won the 2007 Mirage Poker Showdown on the World Poker Tour . Rumor has it that Angélil was also a gambler away from the poker tables, betting up to $ 1 million a week at Caesars Palace and having the same amount of credit at the Hotel Bellagio's casino .

Speculation about Angélil's gambling broke out when the former mayor of Las Vegas and current manager of Harrah's Communications , Jan Jones , was quoted by a reporter for the British newspaper The Observer as saying: “Celine Dion's husband is a gambler on a grand scale. He's probably risking $ 1 million a week, but he can afford it. ”Caesars Palace, owned by Harrah's , issued a denial.
