Norbert Himmler (born January 24, 1971 in Mainz ) is a German media manager , journalist and editor . Since 2012 he has been the program director of the Second German Television . In July 2021, the ZDF television council elected him as the designated director from March 2022.

Life

Himmler grew up in Mainz. His father Robert was a police officer and head of the Rhineland-Palatinate riot police , his mother was a pharmacist.

Study time

From 1991 to 1996, Himmler studied German and political science at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . After completing the first state examination, he received his doctorate in 1999 at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with an analysis of British foreign policy from 1989 to 1990.

Positions at ZDF (1997–2012)

At ZDF he initially worked as a student assistant, from 1997 he worked as a freelancer in today's editorial team. After his editorial traineeship from 1998 to 1999, he worked, among other things, at Länderspiegel and in the planning department. In 2002, Himmler became a consultant to the then editor-in-chief Nikolaus Brender and in the same year took over the management of the planning department. In 2008 he became head of the main editorial department for feature films. In 2009 he also took over the management of the new channel ZDFneo . The aim was to make ZDF more interesting for younger viewers as well.

ZDF program director (since 2012)

At the suggestion of artistic director Thomas Bellut and confirmation by the ZDF board of directors , Himmler became ZDF program director on April 1, 2012. In this role he is responsible for the fictional program, shows, music and comedy programs, the children's program as well as culture, history and science at ZDF. He is also responsible for the ZDFneo broadcaster , the ZDF 's supplies to the children's channel and, since 2017, the lead management of the 3sat cultural channel .

On April 5, 2014, Himmler announced that the show Wetten, dass ...? will be discontinued this December. He justified this with "changes in the show sector" and falling audience numbers. In 2013 he had expressed the opposite opinion in the “ log-in ” magazine on ZDFinfo , Wetten, dass ..? is still one of the "big brands" in the German television landscape. In the meantime, however, the show had lost further audience appeal.

In 2018 he agreed the European Alliance with France Télévisions and RAI for the production of joint European series. In April 2019, the BBC and ZDF agreed a more extensive collaboration on joint television projects under program directors Charlotte Moore and Himmler.

In February 2019, Norbert Himmler launched the digital culture platform ZDFkultur together with German cultural institutions. A total of 35 cultural partnerships were set up for the start. Agreed with the Alte Pinakothek in Munich , the Städel in Frankfurt and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation .

On January 22nd, 2016, the ZDF board of directors extended Himmler's contract to March 2022. At the beginning of June 2021, ZDF announced Himmler's candidacy for the upcoming election as director on the broadcaster. The previous incumbent Bellut will leave office on March 15, 2022 and will no longer stand for re-election.

ZDF director (expected from 2022)

On July 2, 2021, Norbert Himmler was elected artistic director in the third ballot by the ZDF television council with 57 of the 60 votes. His competitor Tina Hassel had previously withdrawn her candidacy. In the first two ballots, Himmler was able to win more votes than Hassel, but he did not achieve the three-fifths majority of 36 of the 60 votes required by the ZDF State Treaty for an election. In the election, Hassel was the favorite of the SPD-affiliated "red circle of friends" within the television council, while Himmler was the favorite of the CDU-affiliated "black circle of friends". Himmler is expected to take up the post in March 2022, succeeding Thomas Bellut.

Private

Norbert Himmler is married, has two children, a daughter and a son, and lives near Mainz. According to his own statement, he is “neither related nor related by marriage” to Heinrich Himmler .
