Oswald Ring (born January 18, 1935 in Pirmasens ) is a former German lawyer and media manager . From 1988 to 1998 he was program director of the Second German Television .

life and career

From 1954 Oswald Ring studied law in Mainz and Heidelberg as well as history and sociology as a minor. In 1958 he passed the first state examination, followed by the second state examination in 1963.

On June 1, 1964, he was hired by ZDF and worked there in the legal department. In 1978, Ring became the head of the human resources department, which was converted into the main human resources department in 1980. At the same time, he headed the Fees and Licenses divisions. In addition, from 1983 he was deputy administrative director of the television station. During this time he gained a reputation as an excellent manager and administrative specialist.

On April 1, 1988, Ring, who had never worked in programming before, surprisingly became the new ZDF program director. In 1989, in view of the emerging freedom of movement on German television, ZDF saw no reason to “introduce a program largely geared to the subject of eroticism”.
During his tenure, the ratings among younger viewers fell. He was unable to counteract this development, so that director Dieter Stolte decided in 1998 not to extend Oswald Ring's expiring contract. His successor was Markus Schächter , who had previously headed the program planning department and had already gained greater influence on Stolte.

Others

Thomas Bellut , today's director of ZDF, was Oswald Ring's personal advisor from 1988 to 1990.
