RTL 4 is the first private broadcaster to receive a slot on Dutch cable . It started on October 2, 1989 under the name RTL Véronique. RTL 4 is part of RTL Nederland , which also includes RTL 5 , RTL 7 and RTL 8 .

When RTL Véronique started, private channels were still banned in the Netherlands and the channel broadcast from Luxembourg and was also officially registered as a Luxembourg channel. RTL Véronique was a collaboration between Veronica's staff (Lex Harding and Ruud Hendriks) and CLT . In June 1990, the station was named RTL 4, as it was the fourth full program after Nederland 1 , Nederland 2 and Nederland 3 . The name change was preceded by a massive advertising campaign in which the Dutch were asked to save RTL Veronique on program number 4 (Zet'm op 4!). From the end of 1989 RTL 4 was also broadcast analogously via the Astra 19.2 ° E satellite . For copyright reasons, programs such as series and films had to be encrypted. The easy-to-decrypt Luxcrypt was used for this . RTL 4 now broadcasts in the Netherlands and Luxembourg via DVB-T2 , cable and satellite .
