The Neustiftgasse in Vienna is a street in the 7th district construction . It crosses the entire length of the district from the double line to the belt .

history

Vasquez: Map of Ortisei, ca.1830

The street already existed around 1100 in the area of the former suburb of St. Ulrich - Zeismannsbrunn along the Ottakringerbach . The adjoining street village of Neustift is mentioned in a document in the 14th century. Around 1550 houses were built above today's Kirchengasse, which before 1621 became an independent community of Neustift. Original names were Am Platzel, Herrengasse, Kapuzinergasse, Stadelgasse.

At today's Augustinplatz (area of the intersection with Kellermanngasse) straw was sold twice a week (hence the name Strohplatzl until 1862) and the Neustift market also took place here.

In 1862 the uniform name Neustiftgasse was given.

In 1780 the street was extended to Kaiserstraße , after the abandonment and demolition of the line wall in 1896 it was extended to the Gürtel.

description

Neustiftgasse begins on Museumstrasse. Right at the beginning is the Volkstheater on the left and opposite the monument to Ferdinand Raimund in Weghuber Park . Subsequent to the Palais Trautson -based Ministry of Justice Mechitaristenkirche Maria is protection on the north side. The road runs in a straight line to the intersection with Kirchengasse / Kellermanngasse; In the area of the intersection, it widens on the north side in the form of an elongated triangular square (Augustinplatz). Immediately in front of it, on the opposite side between houses No. 25, 27 and 29 on the one hand and No. 31 on the other, is the funnel-shaped entrance to St. Ulrichs-Platz.

At the Kirchengasse / Kellermanngasse intersection, Neustiftgasse makes a slight bend to the right, and from then on runs in a straight line to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel . After the bridge over the route of the U6 subway , the street continues on Koppstraße.

The entire street is closed on both sides, largely from historicism ; There are only a few buildings from the Baroque and Biedermeier periods.

Green areas are only sparse. After the Weghuberpark in front of the Palais Trautson there is only a landscaped area in the Augustinplatz area.

traffic

Neustiftgasse is a major arterial road in the western districts of Vienna and the main street A classified. It is a one-way street going out of town (i.e. from Museumstrasse in the direction of Gürtel). There are consistently two lanes, of which the right is dedicated as a bus lane , which can also be used by cyclists , taxis and commercial ambulance services; The left lane is intended for motorized individual traffic.

After tram line 48, which ran through the parallel Burggasse , was closed, the replacement bus line 48A (1968 to 1974: 48) has been running since 1968, following the one-way route through Neustiftgasse in the direction of Baumgartner Höhe (out of town), in the direction of the Ring - Volkstheater ( towards the city), however, continue through Burggasse.

Neustiftgasse is crossed by bus line 13A at Kirchengasse / Kellermanngasse (direction Alser Straße) and at Neubaugasse (direction main station ) (this connection is interrupted from February to autumn 2020 due to a comprehensive redesign of Neubaugasse) as well as by tram line 5 at Kaiserstrasse.

Access to the underground is at Museumstraße ( U2 , Volkstheater ) and at Lerchenfelder Gürtel ( U6 , Thaliastraße ).
