The Lerchenfelder Straße station is a former underground station on the Vienna underground line U2 and is located on the border between the 1st , 7th and 8th districts of Vienna. It is located directly under the Auerspergstraße / Museumstraße between the Rathaus and Volkstheater stations . The station had two side platforms and exits to Schmerlingplatz in the 1st district and to Lerchenfelder Strasse, the border between the 7th and 8th district. It was possible to change to tram line 46 in the direction of Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring or Joachimsthalerplatz. This tram stop was renamed Auerspergstraße after the underground station was closed .
The Palais Auersperg is located in the 8th district and the Palace of Justice in the 1st district in the immediate vicinity of the former underground station .
history
The station was opened on October 8, 1966 as a stop for the Unterpflasterstrassenbahn and maintained by the two-way lines E 2 , G 2 and H 2 . In 1968 the local council passed the resolution to build the underground network , to which this line belonged; it was to be converted for subway operation. After the end of the tram service at the end of June 1980, the station was reopened on August 30, 1980 as a subway station on the new U2 subway line .
In the years 2000 to 2002, the platforms of all stations of the U2 line (except this one) were converted for operation with long trains with a view to extending the U2 towards the stadium . Since the platforms of the important Volkstheater underground station , linked to the U3, were to be extended from 75 meters in the direction of the Lerchenfelder Straße station to 115 meters, which would have further reduced the distance between the stations, the decision was made to use the Lerchenfelder station Letting up road. This took place on September 27, 2003.
The Volkstheater station just 200 meters away is available as a replacement. The cladding elements, station signs and benches have been removed, but the platforms are still there and can be seen when driving through. The premises are now used for safety equipment.
Design
On the western edge of Schmerlingplatz, a U2 ventilation structure was adapted as a work of art with the title Jahreszeiten in 2005 . The building was encased in glass by the architect Klaus Schlauss. The artists Cécile Nordegg and Jonathan Berkh hung painted cloths and sheets of paper behind the glass surfaces. The brightly colored surfaces are intended to awaken vegetal associations and are reminiscent of landscapes.
