The Kaiser Street is a street in the 7th district of Vienna construction . It leads from Mariahilfer Straße to Lerchenfelder Straße .

history

Kaiserstrasse emerged from a field path. After the line wall was built in 1704, the construction of the first houses began; further houses in the area of Schottenfeld followed in the middle of the 18th century. At the end of this century, the road , which has been named Kaiserweg since 1760 , was completely built up; it was now named Kaiserstrasse (after Emperor Joseph II ).

On June 5, 1890, a horse-drawn tram line was opened through Kaiserstrasse. From January 28, 1897, the line running here was the first in Vienna to be converted to electrical operation.

description

Kaiserstraße connects Stumpergasse ( Mariahilf ) with Blindengasse ( Josefstadt ) on the western edge of Neubau . It begins on Mariahilfer Straße and runs straight to Lerchenfelder Straße. The first house on the right is the building of the former Stafa department store , shortly afterwards on the left the Lazarist church and monastery, then the former Sophienspital and after the intersection with Stollgasse the complex of the religious house of the Sisters of the Divine Savior. The road climbs slightly up to Westbahnstraße, then flattens out and descends from Neustiftgasse to Lerchenfelderstraße in the valley of the Ottakringerbach .

The street is closed on both sides; the building fabric comes mainly from the period of late historicism or the beginning of the 20th century; there are still some buildings from the suburban development of the Biedermeier .

The only noteworthy green space is the Josef-Strauss-Park at the end of the street (between house numbers 100 and 106).

traffic

As a direct connection 6 to 8 District Kaiser Street is the main street A classified. In continuation of Stumpergasse it is from Mariahilfer Straße to Stollgasse one-way street in the direction of Lerchenfelder Straße; From Stollgasse, traffic is possible in both directions. In the direction of Mariahilfer Straße, both individual traffic and trams are diverted through the Stollgasse to the Gürtel. Space is limited; There are only two lanes between the vehicles parked on both sides of the lane, in which the tram tracks also run, so that there is no space for separate facilities for individual user groups such as cycle lanes .

Tram line 5 runs through Kaiserstraße as a public means of transport . Because of the narrow width of the street, there are repeated obstructions to the tram from carelessly parked cars that protrude into the clearance profile of the tram and block it.

Crossing lines that open up Kaiserstraße are tram line 49 (Westbahnstraße) and bus line 48A (Burggasse towards Ring, Neustiftgasse towards Baumgartner Höhe). The tram line 46 (Lerchenfelder Straße) does not have a stop on Kaiserstraße, but a few steps away on the Gürtel.

There is no access to the subway directly on Kaiserstraße. The exit to the Westbahnhof underground station (lines U3 and U6 ) in Mariahilfer Straße is one block away, the Thaliastraße underground station on the U6 line on Lerchenfelder Straße - Thaliastraße is also close by on the Gürtel.
