The Horyzont II is a training and research ship of the Maritime University of Gdynia .
history
The ship was under the hull number SBS 6152/1 on the shipyard Gdanska Stocznia "Remontowa" built. The launch took place on June 22, 1999. The ship was completed on May 15, 2000. The ship was christened by Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz , then chairwoman of the Polish central bank Narodowy Bank Polski . The ship replaced the two ships Horyzont and Zenit .
The hull of the ship was initially built for the "Polarex" project, a sailing ship with two masts that was primarily intended to be used in the polar regions. Around nine months a year it should be used for research tasks and the supply of polar stations, but also for tourism purposes, while the remaining three months should be available for training seafarers. The concept for the ship was designed by Dariusz Bogucki in 1987. The hull was launched in May 1992, but the project was discontinued due to a lack of funds.
In 1999 the Maritime University of Gdynia bought the hull on which the Horyzont II was built at the Gdanska Stocznia "Remontowa" shipyard . In the course of construction, the 46.8 meter long hull was extended by around 10 meters to 56.34 meters. The ship was financed with funds from the Polish state and the university.
commitment
The ship is used by the Maritime University of Gdynia as a training ship for the training of seafarers. It is also used as a research ship and for supplying the research station of the Polish Academy of Sciences on Spitsbergen . Two 20-foot containers can be carried on deck . Depending on requirements, these can be laboratory containers, but also transport containers.
2000/2001 the ship was to supply the Polish research station on the South Shetland Islands belonging to King George Iceland used. It covered almost 18,700 nautical miles . The ship turned out to be too small for the task.
In August 2017 the ship was used to simulate the call of a cruise ship in rather small ports in the southern Baltic Sea as part of the research project "Johann", which is funded by the EU as part of the Interreg-V program .
Technical data and equipment
It is powered by a four-stroke - eight-cylinder - diesel engine of the type Sulzer 8S20UD with 1280 kW power , that of ZPM H. Cegielski in Poznan was built under license. The engine acts on a controllable pitch propeller . The ship reaches a speed of 12 knots . The ship is equipped with a bow thruster with 125 kW power.
Three generators driven by MAN diesel engines (301 kW output, 376 kVA apparent output ) are used to generate electricity . Another diesel generator set, which is also powered by a MAN diesel engine, is available as an emergency generator (158 kW output).
There is space on board for a total of 57 people (including the 16-person crew ) who are accommodated in single and double cabins.
The ship is equipped with an echo sounder and sonar system as well as winches . Two cranes are installed on deck, which can lift 2.7 and 8 t respectively.
