Surname

The place name is likely to be derived from the Old High German linta ( linden tree ): LinpachLimpachLimbach is therefore the place on the Lindenbach.

history

Limbach was founded in the course of the Franconian conquest in the 6th to 8th centuries and was occupied as an outpost of the Castells Altimoin with three deans (ten farmers each capable of military service). Excavations on the Spitzberg west of Limbach also have a Celtic settlement as early as 450 BC. Proven.

Limbach was first mentioned in a document as part of the Gumbert Foundation in 741. It achieved its real importance as a place of pilgrimage ; As early as 1023, reports were made of the first pilgrimage to a chapel on the site of the current pilgrimage church.

The first figures of this earlier pilgrimage chapel date from the year 1201 according to the inscriptions on the pillars, there are many other references to the constant expansion of this church. After Limbach was temporarily Evangelical Lutheran, it returned to the Catholic Church in 1630. With the granting of the letter of grace , Limbach was confirmed in 1660 as an "ancient pilgrimage". The church received the miraculous image back in 1698 (created around 1500) and had its last heyday in 1701 with the consecration of bells. In 1721 it turned out to be dilapidated.

In 1714 a Jewish cemetery was set up in Limbach .

Over time, Limbach developed into a village for raftsmen. The inhabitants, previously mainly engaged in agriculture and cattle breeding, operated the Main shipping and timber trade or hired themselves as servants on larger ships. The chronicler noted: "Limbach lives in moderate prosperity and pays its own pastor and school teacher".

On July 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Limbach was incorporated into the city of Eltmann.

economy

Around 80% of all employees from Limbach are out-commuters and work in companies in the surrounding area, there are only five full-time farms. The fields are west of Limbach.

A new focus after the Second World War was the expansion of the Main into a large shipping route. One of the many barrages near Limbach was put into operation in 1951. The 300 meter long ship lock and the huge river power station created a completely new townscape.
