Gunzendorf (Buttenheim)

Gunzendorf is a village with around 520 inhabitants. It belongs to the municipality of Buttenheim ( Bamberg district in Bavaria ) and is located between Dreuschendorf and Stackendorf . The place was namesake of the noble family Ochs von Gunzendorf . Significant buildings are the Baroque Curate Church of St. Nicholas and the Chapel of St. George, which were built in 1668 and 1669.

The Georgiritt takes place every year. Starting from the church of St. Nikolaus, it leads up to the baroque chapel of St. Georg on Senftenberg .

On January 1, 1972, Stackendorf was incorporated. On May 1, 1978 Gunzendorf was incorporated into Buttenheim.

The Franconian Marienweg runs through the village .

Son of the village

  • Albert Först OCarm , Bishop of Dourados (Brazil) from 1990 to 2001 , (born November 26, 1926 in Gunzendorf; † November 1, 2014 in Eggolsheim) was a German clergyman and bishop of Dourados. He was particularly committed to the education of street children in Dourados. He founded the CIENA Foundation (Center de Integracão do Adolescente Dom Alberto).
