The Senftenberg is a mountain nose north of Gunzendorf, municipality of Buttenheim in the Bamberg district . The front mountain spur reaches a height of 399 m above sea level behind the chapel , the rear ridge above the cellars of 435 m above sea level.

The name Senftenberg probably comes from the word swamp , which is very likely due to the fact that the slopes of the mountain are relatively humid even in dry months.

history

Probably around 1000 AD there was a castle on the mountain called Obersenftenberg . The complex was protected by ramparts and ditches. The earliest documented mention comes from 1243.

In the second half of the 13th century, the Noble Free von Schlüsselberg built a second castle on the Senftenberg called Niedersenftenberg . The St. George's Chapel is located there today. The first documentary mention of Niedersenftenberg was in 1295. In this document, Vogt Ulrich von Senftenberg is mentioned. In 1296 Konrad von Senftenberg was Vogt. Both castles existed side by side for a century. In the Peasants' War in 1525, the Niedersenftenberg Castle was destroyed.

Saint George's Chapel

The first chapel in Niedersenftenberg Castle, consecrated to St. George , was first mentioned in a document in 1308. When the castle was destroyed in the Peasants' War, the chapel was also devastated. But soon afterwards a new chapel was built in the same place, and its patron was St. George. In the years 1668/69 a third new chapel was built with the patronage of St. George. The builder was the Swiss Valentin Juliot von Gufle.

Georgiritt

Georgiritt to Senftenberg

As early as the 16th century, individual farmers rode to Senftenberg to ask for help from St. George, who was also the farmers' patron saint . The church became a pilgrimage church in honor of St. George for the first time after miraculous hearings, which are said to go back to the intercession of the saint, became known from 1618. The pilgrimage went on for centuries and ended in 1848 when two men were killed in a scuffle.

A way of the cross with 14 stations leads up to the chapel. It was laid out in 1898 and probably paved with concrete slabs in the 1960s. The stations and the path were renovated in 2002 because of their poor condition and severe damage for over 100,000 euros.

On the intercession of Frankendorf's mayor and farrier Georg Brütting and Gunzendorf curate Johann Georg Barnickel, the Georgiritt was revived after the Second World War with the permission of the Bamberg diocese . On April 26, 1951, the first new Georgiritt took place in over 100 years. It is held annually on the Sunday after the feast of St. George (April 23), but not as a pilgrimage, but as a procession in honor of St. George.
