Bischbrunn founding legend

At the foot of the Geyersberg , the highest altitude in the Spessart Forest, the main traffic route between Aschaffenburg and Marktheidenfeld has long been. The Mainz bishops, once owners of the Spessart, not only hunted red deer and wild boar up here, but also used this route on trips to neighboring Würzburg.

It was on one such occasion that on this inhospitable path, at that time there was no human settlement here for hours, the bishop's entourage ran out of drinks. The journey was arduous and on the descent from Geyersberg the midday sun, which was shining brightly down from the blue sky, made itself felt by a general feeling of thirst. The bishop also asked for a fresh drink.

A servant with knowledge of the forest found a freshly bubbling spring not far from the road, halfway between today's Torhaus Aurora and Strasslücke . He filled the cup and handed the first drink to the bishop. He tasted the refreshing water, gave the cup back to the servant and, with great satisfaction, ordered that the spring should henceforth be called the Bishop's Fountain. A forester's house soon rose beneath it and gradually a settlement followed that bears the same name, but abbreviated, Bischbrunn.
