history
The Aurora gatehouse once had two important meanings. It was a customs house between former territories and an entrance gate to a historic wildlife park.
The gatehouse was built on a historic main street . This street leading to Frankfurt was mentioned as "heristrata" (Heerstraße) as early as 839. Later it was the Poststrasse from Frankfurt to Würzburg. It was graveled as a road around 1770 based on the French model and expanded as federal highway 8 in the 20th century . Until at least 1789, customs officers and road money collectors sat in the Aurora gatehouse . Then it was converted into a forester's house in 1796 . The wooden fall gate house was replaced by the current stone structure.
Around 1700, the Elector of Mainz, Franz von Schönborn, had an approximately 10 km² game reserve built in the Bischbrunn Forest . In 1730 the area was expanded to 11 km². The Torhaus Aurora was an entrance to the enclosure at that time. When the area became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria , the park was expanded to form the Royal Bavarian Wildlife Park, which is almost 60 km² in size . The wildlife park was surrounded by a 50 km long fence. It began in Erlenfurt , led over the Weihersgrund to the Torhaus Aurora and on to Schollbrunn . From there it led via Altenbuch and Hundsrück to Rohrbrunn , where the Luitpoldshöhe hunting lodge was built. Past Weibersbrunn and Lichtenau , the fence led back to Erlenfurt. At that time there were several entrances to the wildlife park: Inner and Outer Regenstor, Rindtor, Rehtor, Höhentor, Klein Törchen, Steinhirscheltor, Frickengrundtor, Kreuzsteintor, Kreuztor, Rohrwiesentor and Steintor. A piece of the historic fence was reconstructed at the Regenstor. The Royal Bavarian Wildlife Park bordered the Fürstlich Löwensteinschen Wildlife Park in the east .
