Heinrich II of Sonneberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich II. Von Sonneberg (* before 1249; † 1288 ) came from the von Sonneberg family and was the founder of the Sonnefeld monastery .

With the death of Duke Otto II of Meranien on June 19, 1248 at Niesten Castle , the imperial principality, in whose service the castle and servants of Sonneberg who were capable of tournaments , had administered imperial feuds in the Coburg and Sonneberg area, went out. Heinrich II was then given the task of repositioning the Sonneberg rulership. In 1252 and around 1260 he acquired extensive property in the Sonneberg and Coburg environs from the Benedictine Abbey of Saalfeld .

Heinrich II and his wife Kunigunde founded the Sonnefeld Monastery in 1260 and furnished it with goods from his property. He can be found in 1279, along with other people from the area around the Sonnefeld monastery, among the witnesses in the foundation charter of the Himmelkron monastery , which means that the first nuns of the monastery also came from Sonnefeld.
