Ernst Freiherr von Bibra (born June 9, 1806 in Schwebheim , † June 5, 1878 in Nuremberg ) was a German naturalist and writer .

Life

Ernst von Bibra first studied law in Würzburg and joined the Corps Franconia . Later he switched to the natural sciences and turned to chemistry in particular . In 1844 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

In 1849 he traveled to Brazil and around Cape Horn to Chile, which he traversed in all directions. He gave a report about this trip in his travels in South America . In 1853 von Bibra published the contributions to the natural history of Chile . These included the scientific records of his journey from Santiago to Valparaiso with meteorological, botanical, zoological and ethnographic details. After his return he lived mostly in Nuremberg, where he exhibited his rich natural history and ethnographic collections. Beginning with travel sketches in novelistic style and descriptions of cultural history, von Bibra has focused on works of fiction in recent years. In 1862 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Today von Bibra is best known for his book The narcotic luxury foods and man . It is considered a pioneer in ethnopsychopharmacology and provides a comprehensive overview of various intoxicating and pleasure drugs around the world that was unique for its time .
