The Barons Schertlin von Burtenbach (also Schertel von Burtenbach ) are a southern German noble family named after their former rule in the area of Burtenbach .

The best-known representative and progenitor of the family was the field captain Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach (1496–1577), who was in the service of the Swabian Federation and the city of Augsburg and who in 1532 acquired the rule of Burtenbach.

Sebastian's son Johann Sebastian (1523–1596) inherited the local rule in the villages of Beihingen am Neckar , Geisingen am Neckar and Heutingsheim in 1588 . He became the progenitor of a branch of the family that had a major influence on the history of Freiberg am Neckar until 1809 . After 1588, the Schertel von Burtenbach succeeded the Lords of Stammheim in Stammheim and Zazenhausen . In 1616 Johann Friedrich Schertel von Burtenbach acquired the castle estate Mauren near Ehningen and founded a family line there that continued until 1766. In 1632 the Schertel also acquired the town of Tairnbach .

The von Schertel villa in Wiesbaden goes back to the family .
