geography

Geographical location

View from the north, from Ingersheimer Höhe, to Freiberg

Freiberg am Neckar extends from a bend in the river Neckar in the north of the city to the mountain ranges bordering south and west. The height differences in Freiberg range from over 183  m above sea level. NHN at the Geisinger Neckar valley up to 285  m above sea level. NHN on Millennium Hill (near Heutingsheim). It is a typical small town in the affluent, easily accessible periphery of a large city region. The cityscape is characterized on the one hand by residential areas with single-family houses and small multi-family houses, on the other hand by traffic and a ring of commercial areas. The A 81 motorway runs through the city .

There is a tidy landscape on the hills around the city. The fertile clay- limestone soils are well suited for intensive agricultural use. The farms are located in the middle of fields and fruit-growing areas, loosely distributed outside the closed urban area. From the hills above the city there are sweeping views of the Neckarland, Hohenasperg and Stromberg , and the valleys and mountains of the Murr and Bottwar regions. However, these panoramas are shaped by high-voltage pylons: Immediately south of the Freiberg district is the large Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck substation . From there, power lines run in a star shape in all directions, including over the mountain ranges south, east and west of Freiberg.

City structure

The city of Freiberg am Neckar consists of the formerly independent communities of Beihingen am Neckar, Geisingen am Neckar and Heutingsheim. badges and flags

The city coat of arms of Freiberg shows three (2: 1) golden balls / laible in blue . The city flag is yellow-blue. The coat of arms and flag were awarded to Freiberg on September 3, 1973.

Beihingen on the Neckar
  • The Freiberg city coat of arms is identical to the coat of arms of the former community of Beihingen am Neckar . It comes from the coat of arms of the Lords of Freyberg , from which the city name Freiberg am Neckar was derived after the voluntary amalgamation of the three formerly independent communities of Beihingen am Neckar, Geisingen am Neckar and Heutingsheim. Ludwig von Freyberg ruled over the castle and the greater part of the village of Beihingen from 1534 to 1569.

In today's interpretation, the three spheres symbolize the three parts of the city. The coats of arms of the other two districts were as follows:

Geisingen am Neckar
  • Geisingen am Neckar : a golden goblet in blue
Heutingsheim
  • Heutingsheim : a golden lily in black

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Historic traffic sign on the Beihinger Schlosspress

Freiberg is on the Backnang – Ludwigsburg line , which is served by the S4 ( Backnang - Marbach - Stuttgart Schwabstraße ) of the Stuttgart S-Bahn . The train station, which is now in the district of Heutingsheim, was opened in 1879 under the name Beihingen and was initially on the Backnang – Bietigheim line. Two years later a branch line to Ludwigsburg was branched off here. After the city was founded, the station was renamed "Freiberg (Neckar)" on June 1, 1975. The location of the line from Freiberg to Bietigheim-Bissingen, which was not put into operation again after 1945, can still be found today over large parts in nature. In Freiberg, the street “Alte Bahnlinie” runs next to the old embankment, which is still reminiscent of the railway line today. In the further course of the old route, the embankment, an up to 13 m deep incision near the Wilhelmshof, bridges, track fragments and a former station keeper's house can still be found today.

In 2011 the connection in the direction of Marbach to Benningen was expanded to two tracks. Today the S-Bahn station has an annual frequency of 1.4 million passengers.

Africa House

The entrepreneur Arthur Benseler was enthusiastic and committed to African art and culture throughout his life . Right from the start, he built his private house as a home for African art, music and literature: the Africa House . For the time after his death he left it as a museum to the city of Freiberg am Neckar. There are around 150 sculptures and pictures in and around this museum, some of which were collected by Arthur Benseler during his 30-year travels, but some of which were supplemented by the city of Freiberg.

The museum in the Schlössle in the Geisinger Gutsschlösschen documents the historical development of Freiberg. It shows the early history from the first evidence of human settlement, the history of the noble landlords, the development of handicrafts, agriculture and industry as well as the history of times of war and times of need on site. There is also an interesting exhibition on Springerle at Christmas time.

Buildings

Beihingen district

Amandus Church in Freiberg-Beihingen

The Amandus Church from the 16th century was originally laid out as a fortified church and is located on a hill above the old town center. It is worth seeing because of its structural diversity with elements from many epochs, its paintings and its valuable organ from 1766, whose prospectus was preserved and whose sound structure was renewed in 1981 based on the old model.

Old Beihingen Castle

The old Beihingen Castle is within sight of the Amandus Church, built by the Lords of Nothaft and the Lords of Gemmingen . The oldest part of the old castle are the remains of a residential tower from the 13th century. The buildings that still exist today were essentially constructed in 1480 and 1680. Today it houses archives and club rooms.

The new castle on the opposite side of the street was built by Friedrich von Breitenbach in 1573 and has since served as a residence for a number of aristocratic families. Today it is privately owned by the von Graevenitz family. In addition to the three-storey main building, the former tithe barn, built in 1591, is visible from Ludwigsburger Strasse; both buildings have been restored in the color scheme of the time they were built.

The castle press is located in the immediate vicinity of the two castles. It was rebuilt in 1730, in place of a wine press that had existed since 1577. The building has been owned by the municipality since 1964. Today it serves as a place for cultural events.

Old town hall and today's youth center. Behind the old school house and the Amandus Church

In the former town center, the old town hall from the 16th and 17th centuries, the birthplace of Johann Friedrich Flattich , has been preserved at Neckarstraße 5, where the town's youth center is now located. House no. 6 is the former schoolhouse from 1776. Other historically noteworthy buildings in the old town center are the houses in Mühlstrasse 1 and Benninger Strasse 13, 15 and 17 from the 17th century. The courtyard of house no. 13 belongs to the former Kleinbottwarer Hof, which dates back to the 13th century.

In the Neckar lies the Beihingen weir , where the Pleidelsheim side canal branches off from the oxbow lake.

Geisingen district

Nikolauskirche and farm buildings of the upper castle
Schlössle

The late Gothic St. Nicholas Church is located in Geisingen. First a chapel was built in 1474, which now serves as a choir. The main nave and tower were added in 1521 and 1522. In 1900 the tower received its current pointed roof instead of an earlier hooded roof. Inside the churches are the tombs of the former local lords, the von Stammheim and Schertlin von Burtenbach families from the 16th century.

Immediately below the church is the upper Geisinger Castle , first mentioned at the end of the 16th century and rebuilt in 1723 , the so-called Kniestedt'sche Castle. About 200 m further below, on the flat valley floor, is the lower castle , the ancestral seat of the Lords of Stammheim, a former moated castle from 1486. The current buildings are all younger; some of them were only rebuilt in the 20th century according to the old models and in their place. An extension of the old moated castle is the so-called Schlössle, which is marked with the year 1671. Other buildings from the 17th century in the courtyard of the lower castle are the old oil mill and the former wine press.

District Heutingsheim

New opening of the Chinahaus on May 15, 2011
The pulpit bearer in the Church of St. Simon and Jude

The largest original Chinese house in Europe is located on the outskirts of Ludwigsburg-Eglosheim. It is surrounded by a garden that is open to the public and designed according to Taoist principles. The house and garden were built by Chinese construction workers and craftsmen after the site was developed in 1994 by the Chinese Dashi group of companies. All building materials were specially brought in from China. After opening in 1995, it served as a German-Chinese center and restaurant. In 2007, after the operator filed for bankruptcy in the summer of 2006, the house was given up and stood empty. In 2008 the building and the surrounding garden were closed due to the risk of collapse. In November 2008, the Stuttgart Regional Court decided that the operating company, which is in bankruptcy, must return the house and the surrounding area to the city. Renovation work began in May 2010, for which the new owner, Ming Ze Schaumann, hired Chinese craftsmen. The renovated Chinahaus was reopened on May 15, 2011. At the beginning of 2014, however, the house closed again under unexplained circumstances. For a long time, a legal dispute prevented its use, since October 2018 it has been reopened as the Ming China Center and serves as a restaurant, celebration location and center for Far Eastern culture.

The center of the former village of Heutingsheim, in the midst of a densely built-up town center with narrow streets and alleys, was the classicist town hall from 1781, located on the corner of Kirchstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse. The Protestant parish church of Simon and Judas, a late Gothic west tower church from 1487, has a beautifully designed choir with a ribbed vault inside. The keystones show the biblical apostles Simon and Jude (Thadäus) as well as Mary with the child as queen of heaven. The pulpit rests on a stone sculpture: the pulpit bearer, a kneeling man, created by Anton Pilgram , carries it on his shoulders. In the tower, the big bell with the inscription Osanna dates from 1492.

Heutingsheim also has a castle. The building complex, built around 1700 with its manor house and the three-wing farm building, is separated from the street by a castle wall. It is a typical example of a noble country house from that time. The Low German elements on the street-side half-timbered gable of the farm building are atypical for the area.

natural reserve

Flood in the Altneckar nature reserve

The Altneckar nature reserve with its alluvial forest and the adjacent meadow valley is an idyllic recreational area and an ecological oasis between the communities of Freiberg, Pleidelsheim and Ingersheim .

The bridge over the railway line over the A 81 was destroyed on April 20, 1945 by withdrawing German military units. After the Second World War , the bridge was not rebuilt and the railway line was shut down. This side of the A 81, the high embankment of the former Backnang – Bietigheim railway line is protected and maintained as a dry biotope by the city and the local association of the BUND . Beyond the A 81, the railway line cut a deep furrow into the terrain. Through the efforts of the city and the BUND, a protection zone, a dark, damp forest biotope, was also created there.

Recurring events

Citizens' Festival 2014

The citizens' festival takes place on the market square on the third weekend in July. Bands perform on the lake stage, and Freiberg clubs host the Hocketse on the market square . At the beginning of the festival, on Friday, young and old can compete at different distances at the citizens' festival. 2014 was the 40th anniversary of the festival. From 2017 the festival will only be celebrated every two years.

Every year on the Ascension weekend, the Musikverein Stadtkapelle Freiberg organizes the radish festival on the Beihinger Wasen with a large beer tent and numerous musical performances.

Entertainment venues

The large-capacity Palazzo disco has existed in the Ried industrial area since 1977 , one of the oldest and longest continuously operated of its kind. Until 2010, it had a liftable dance floor as a special feature. In 2018, the first sex doll brothel in Baden-Württemberg opened in the Freiberg industrial park. It was closed again after a short time due to resistance from the city administration.
