Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Breyer , from 1808 von Breyer (also Carl ; born September 29, 1771 in Heutingsheim , † April 28, 1818 in Munich ), was a German historian and university professor .

Life

Breyer was the son of pastor Johann Wilhelm Breyer (1741–1800). He received his first education at the monastery schools in Blaubeuren and Bebenhausen . In 1789 he moved into the Tubingen seminary and graduated from the University of Tübingen to study philosophy and theology . In 1794 he came to Stuttgart . There he became a private tutor to the Counts of Reischach before moving to the University of Jena in 1797 . At this he took up a degree in philosophy and history, in particular he devoted himself to studying with Johann Gottlieb Fichte . His habilitation took place at Jena University in 1800 . In 1803, after having worked as a private lecturer , he received a position as associate professor at the Faculty of Philosophy.

In 1804, Breyer accepted an appointment as a full professor of history and statistics at the University of Landshut . He was also appointed royal councilor . There he attracted the attention of Minister Maximilian von Montgelas , at whose instigation he received in 1806 full membership of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He also became a professor at the university lyceum in Munich. In 1808 he was one of the first to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Civil Merit of the Bavarian Crown and thus ennobled . Of King Maximilian the lessons of history and literature, he was Prince Karl Theodor transmitted.
