Attributed self-portrait on the pulpit in Vienna

Anton Pilgram (* around 1460 in Brno , † 1515 in Vienna ) was a Moravian-Austrian builder and sculptor .

After his training he conducted works from the Swabian region, for example at the Kilian's Church in Heilbronn and the Church of St. George in Schwieberdingen . In the Lorenz Chapel in Rottweil , the Weckenmännle probably represents an early self-portrait by Pilgram.

From 1510 to 1511 he worked on the building works of the late Gothic church of St. Jacob in Brno.

From 1511 to 1515, Pilgram took over the building works from Sankt Stephan in Vienna . The cathedral pulpit was often ascribed to Pilgram, especially since it features his stonemason's mark - so he was probably involved in the execution. Nowadays, however, the design is more likely to be attributed to the workshop of Niclas Gerhaert van Leyden , especially since the plastic portrait on the pulpit (the window peeper ) is very dissimilar to the pilgrimage below the organ foot .

However, with the very modern design of the organ stage, he succeeded in pushing the previous cathedral builder Jörg Öchsl out of office and becoming his successor. The gate hall in the Viennese nave was built at a similar time as the organ base in St. Stephen's Cathedral. This work is also often attributed to Anton Pilgram. The rib shapes are comparable with the parish church of Weistrach and the proximity to Benedikt Ried has also been recognized several times, although the stylistic similarities cannot yet be fully clarified.

When, after a lightning strike in 1513, the top of the high tower of St. Stephan had to be removed and replaced, it was not Pilgram, but his partner Gregor Hauser who carried out the technically complicated work.

In his hometown of Brno, too, a number of works have been secured, including the curious portal of the Old Town Hall with the twisted pinnacle .
