The Old Town Hall with its striking town hall tower is one of the oldest and most famous buildings in the old town of the Moravian city ​​of Brno . The core of the current building and the 63 meter high tower were built around 1240 after Brno was granted city rights. In 1424 a chapel was added. The late Gothic entrance portal with the Brno coat of arms and the statue of Justitia was created by Anton Pilgram at the beginning of the 16th century . Council meetings took place here from 1343 to 1935.

Brno dragon

According to legend, a dragon lived near Brno , which terrified the citizens of the city and devoured the farm animals. The city council therefore offered a reward for killing the dragon, but no one succeeded until a shrewd knight had an idea. He wrapped unslaked lime in a cow skin and laid it out as bait for the monster. Then he waited until the dragon devoured the bait and had a drink. When the lime was now slaked, the dragon burst and was thus killed.

According to legend, the carpenter Georg (Jiři) Birk from Eisgrub ( Lednice ) created the bike on May 14, 1636 and rolled it 54 km to Brno on the same day.

Another legend tells of a Wagner from Brno who was falsely imprisoned because his guild accused him of not really being a wheelwright. As proof of his innocence, he made the bike from the bank in his cell that night.

Walled-in councilor

There is a stone face on the western outer wall of the town hall. It is intended to mark the place where a councilor was walled up in this wall during the Hussite Wars in 1424 . The city of Brno sided with Emperor Sigismund during the war , but according to legend, the councilor tried to open the city's gates to the Hussites.
