The Beihingen weir originally served to divert water from the old arm of the Neckar into the power station canal to generate electricity. The corresponding power plant is located in Pleidelsheim at the end of the power plant channel, which has meanwhile been expanded into the Pleidelsheim side channel . It has an output of around 4.4 MW.

The weir was built from 1912 to 1914 and inaugurated on February 9, 1915. This makes it the oldest weir on the navigable part of the Neckar. Originally only used for the purpose of generating electricity, it became passable for large cargo ships with the construction of the Pleidelsheim lock in the 1950s.
