The Hirschhorn barrage was completed in 1933 and dams the Neckar by an average of 5.30 meters. With a double lock on the left bank, it enables shipping traffic on this federal waterway . A road bridge spans over the underwater of the lock chambers and over the three-span weir, serving the traffic between the core town of Hirschhorn on the right bank and the Ersheim district on the left bank. Located between the lock chambers and the overflow weir, the power station building of the hydropower station is positioned perpendicular to the direction of flow. The right lock chamber was renovated in 2005/2006 due to the poor condition of the concrete walls. The gates, drives and controls from 1991 have been retained. The gates, drives and the electrical engineering of the left chamber are partly from the construction period.

Construction project

The obsolete structural elements of the left lock chamber are to be renewed, and the company buildings are to be converted for the new electrical and communications technology. In addition, it is planned to replace the rope impact protection system with a barrier to prevent ships from colliding with the lower gate; A new headwater inspection lock is also planned. After the modernization of the left chamber, the right chamber is to be extended to Oberwasser. Then the outer harbors are to be expanded for the 135 m ship. The traffic conditions in both outer harbors are already considered difficult for the ships, which are no more than 105 m long.

Estimated construction time

The modernization of the left chamber began in autumn 2013 and should be finished in summer 2014. After several extensions of the construction period, there is currently no end of construction indicated on site. The extension of the right chamber was planned for 2019 to 2022, but had to be postponed as the modernization of the left chamber is still not complete.

location

Seen from the Rhine , the Hirschhorn barrage is the sixth system of its kind. It is the only system on the Neckar that is completely located in Hesse.
