The Neckargemünd dam is a river barrage of the Neckar near Neckargemünd in the Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg . Seen from the Rhine , it is the fourth of its kind.

Description and location

The system consists of a double lock on the left bank, a three-field weir and a power station on the right bank downstream. The locks installed in the weir fields and used for stowage control have a total height of 6.00 m. A weir footbridge runs above the barrage and is used as a footpath and farm path. In addition to the enormous age of now over 80 years, the weir shows a variety of damage that must be repaired in order to maintain its functionality over the long term. Contrary to what the name suggests, the facility is not located in the area of the city of Neckargemünd , but extends between the Heidelberg districts of Schlierbach on the left and Ziegelhausen on the right bank of the river.

Lock construction project

In the left chamber, which essentially still has its original components, doors and drives have reached the end of their useful life and urgently need to be replaced. This situation was exacerbated by damage that was caused at the beginning of January 2010 by lost jammed ship parts at the lower gate. The neck bearing rods broke and there was further consequential damage, which resulted in extensive repairs including a lock. The construction measure not only includes the replacement of the gates including the drive, but also the installation of a rope impact protection system with barrier, the renewal of the inspection lock in the upstream water and the resulting solid construction work. Furthermore, the electrical and communications technology will be upgraded to the current state of the art and the operating buildings of the locks will be renovated.

For the 135 m ship, the right chamber is lengthened to underwater while the weir jetty is raised. Since the miter gates, including the drive and controls, were not renovated until the 1990s, it remains to be checked whether a renewal or just an adaptation of the aforementioned components will be necessary.

Construction project weir

Preliminary investigations are currently underway for the Neckargemünd weir to determine how the structure will be renovated or renewed. In front of the Neckargemünd barrage, a 300 m long dolphin berth is also being built in the upstream water.

Estimated construction time

The replacement of the gates in the left chamber started in February 2012 and is expected to continue until 2015. The extension of the right lock is currently planned from 2023 to 2026. The start of construction for the basic overhaul of the Neckargemünd weir is scheduled for 2017. The construction project should be implemented by the end of 2022. The erection of the dolphin berth is planned for 2023.
