The Gundelsheim barrage is a barrage of the Neckar directly at the western entrance to Gundelsheim, a town in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg ( Germany ). The barrage connects the different water level heights of the Neckar in the transition area between the Neckar basin near Heilbronn and the Odenwald .

construction

The Gundelsheim lock is a double lock with two lock basins on the left bank, a three-field barrage in the middle and a hydroelectric power station on the right bank. Immediately below the locks, the Neckar is crossed by a road bridge on the L528.

history

The right lock, the power station and the bridge were built between 1935 and 1937 as part of the Neckar canalisation . Gundelsheim was then within the 50 km security zone of the Versailles Treaty , within which no fortifications were allowed to be built. Nevertheless, in 1935 the army incorporated the area under construction around the power plant on the right bank into an extensive bunker system . It was part of the Neckar-Enz position , comprised several hollow passages and was designed for a crew of 26 men. Officially, the buildings were designated as civil air raid shelters .

On the night of March 29th to 30th, 1945, German troops blew up the Neckar Bridge on their retreat to the east.

The left lock chamber was built in 1958.

In 1992 technical renovation work was carried out on the drive and control technology.

Only the building of the old Neckar mill from 1604 bears witness to the time before the lock was built. The mill operation was discontinued after the Neckar regulation; the building is now used as a restaurant.

In 2012, the Gundelsheim lock was awarded the title “Most water sports-friendly lock” by the German Motor Yacht Association in Düsseldorf.

Construction project

Before the basic overhaul and extension of the right lock chamber, the left chamber will be modernized so that smooth lock operation can be guaranteed. The modernization of the left lock chamber includes the renewal of the gates as well as the drive and control technology. In the right lock chamber, the chamber walls are in urgent need of renovation due to their age. For this purpose the concrete on chamber walls is Planien and moles up to a depth of 40 cm terminated and anchored with a in the stock, reinforced concrete layer in the form of a facing shell rebuilt. As part of the 40 m extension of this lock chamber to Unterwasser, the gate will be replaced and the drive and control technology will be brought up to the current state of the art. To avoid the ship running into the lower gate at a later date, a new cable protection system will be installed. The construction work also includes the adaptation of the drive houses and cable ducts as well as the renewal of the lock equipment (e.g. bollards , ladders). As the outer harbors in the upper and lower water are sufficiently long, only minor adjustments are necessary.

The original plan was to start construction in 2014. As of 2020, this has been postponed, in favor of the Neckarsteinach shipyard on the lower Neckar being accessible with 135 m long ships.

location

Seen from the Rhine , the barrage is the tenth of its kind.
