A cable duct (also known as a cable shaft ) is a system for laying electrical lines . It serves to protect and relieve the mechanical stress on the line. A cable tray is an open design of a cable duct.

Materials

  • In Germany , cable ducts are mostly made of plastic , usually PVC,
  • In North America , steel is a more common material. Plastic is also used, depending on the type and size of the building or local building regulations.

Assembly

In Germany, the plastic cable duct is first screwed or glued to the wall. In North America, the ducts are laid and suspended like other pipes, or they are laid before the concrete is poured and thus become part of walls and ceilings. In the lightweight construction, they run within the framework or above suspended ceilings. Then the cables are laid in the cable duct. For this purpose, electricians usually add ropes to help pull the cables through when the conduit is not provided with a removable cover. Cable ducts are used to avoid complex flush-mounted installations or damage to cables. Cable ducts are also used in living areas or offices for visual reasons to avoid "cable clutter" and tripping hazards and to create a visually tidy impression.

Fire protection

If necessary, cable ducts can be clad with fire protection in order to guarantee the functionality of the lines in the event of fire or to keep escape routes free of fire loads from lines.

Alternatives

Individual cables or wires can be laid on the surface with cable clamps or nail clamps . The cable duct replaces the miner pipe previously used in certain areas . In many areas, plastic pipes can also be fastened with pipe clamps that hold the cables. Corrugated hose is used for laying power cables under plaster, within concrete parts or in drywall and in hollow ceilings, especially if these contain glass wool or loose insulation materials.

Parapet duct

A special variant of the cable duct is the parapet duct. It is similar to the skirting trunking , but is normally installed at parapet height. In addition to cables, the duct also contains electrical installation elements such as sockets , light switches and control elements for electric roller shutters, antenna sockets, connections for telephones, cable and computer networks. Parapet ducts are used particularly frequently in offices and commercial spaces. Connections can be easily adapted to the needs of the workplace and the existing cabling can be changed or expanded quickly and inexpensively without requiring extensive work in the masonry or installation.
