The villa of Schertel in Rossel Street 19 in Wiesbaden is the listed official residence of the prime minister of Hesse .

history

The Munich architect Ernst Haiger built the representative villa for the Schertel von Burtenbach family in the English country house style in 1928/1929 . It is located in the best half-height position on a slightly sloping 6500 m² park-like property on the slope of the Neroberg . In 1937 the state of Prussia acquired the property. After the Second World War , the property was confiscated by the American occupying forces, but returned to the State of Hesse after a few months . Since then it has served as the prime minister's service villa and for representative purposes.

The ground floor is used for representative purposes. In the main room in the middle of the house, the country's receptions and honors take place. There is an apartment on the upper floor that the respective Prime Minister can use privately. A swimming pool on the property was demolished under Prime Minister Holger Börner (SPD).

Use as a service villa

The use as a private apartment ended with the “service villa affair” of Prime Minister Hans Eichel (SPD). At the beginning of 1993 the house was rebuilt for the sum of 1.6 million  DM on behalf of Eichel. In addition to the absolute amount, the opposition mainly criticized the fact that some of the contracts were awarded to an architect from Eichel's hometown of Kassel . Even if an audit by the state audit office did not reveal any illegal expenditure, Eichel (who was also accused of nepotism in the “ lottery affair ” ) assessed the commission as “naive”.

No Hessian Prime Minister has used the villa privately since Eichel. A change in the Hessian ministerial law also contributed to this, according to which the prime minister can no longer use the apartment free of charge, but instead for a local rent (which would be high due to the location and size of the apartment of 200 m²).
