Albrecht III. von Heßberg († October 22, 1382 probably in Würzburg ) was from 1372 to 1376 anti-bishop of Würzburg .

Albrecht III. in the family context

Albrecht III. comes from the Thuringian - Franconian family of von Heßberg . The place Heßberg is now incorporated into Veilsdorf in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia . Already in the period from 1202 to 1207 a family member, Heinrich IV. Von Heßberg , was bishop of Würzburg.

Albrecht III. as a bishop

Albrecht III. first appeared from 1332 as Canon of Würzburg . He is a judge in arbitration courts, and in 1338 he liberated the occupied city of Ochsenfurt from Lupold kitchen master von Nordenberg . From 1356 to 1360 he worked as provost of the cathedral, but was ousted by the bishop of Rouen, Peter Cardinal Foresta (also Pierre IV. De la Forêt ) , who was favored by the pope , and continued his work as canon and archdeacon. He was provost of St. Gumbertus in Ansbach.

After the death of Bishop Albrecht II von Hohenlohe , both the Bamberg cathedral dean Withego Hildbrandi and Albrecht III. elected bishop by a minority. With the support of King Charles IV , Pope Gregory XI sat down . over this decision and spoke out in favor of Gerhard von Schwarzburg , who, as the beleaguered Bishop of Naumburg , wanted a new sphere of activity. While Withego Hildbrandi left Naumburg as bishop , Gerhard first had to fight for his place. The supporters of Albrecht III. in the Würzburg citizenship and the clergy was great and also the neighboring princes, such as Margrave Friedrich III. or Wilhelm I of Meissen had to be stopped by the Pope to support Gerhard. Charles IV finally imposed the imperial ban on the city of Würzburg and Albrecht III. gave way in the summer of 1373 to the approaching army of Gerhard. Albrecht III. stayed in the following three years on his estates in Trimberg and Werneck and reconciled with his opponent in 1376. Until his death he is again occupied as a canon.
