Withego II. Hildbrandi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Withego II. Hildbrandi , also Wittich (o) and also incorrectly referred to in more recent literature as von Wolframsdorf († October 16, 1381, probably in Zeitz ), was bishop of Würzburg in 1372 and then bishop of Naumburg from 1372 to 1381.

Even modern authors like Alfred Wendehorst wrongly assign Withego to the Thuringian noble family of those von Wolframsdorf . According to Heinz Wießner, this assignment goes back to the falsified chronicle of the Naumburg garrison schoolmaster Johann Georg Rauhe in the second half of the 18th century , Withego comes from the middle-class Prague Hildbrandi family, from which a few other influential family members emerged at the time.

The Bamberg cathedral dean Withego and Albrecht III. von Heßberg were elected at the same time after the death of Würzburg bishop Albrecht II von Hohenlohe . Although Withego had the majority of the cathedral chapter behind him, he could face Albrecht III. not enforce. Withego went personally to Avignon to Pope Gregory XI. In the presence of the Naumburg bishop Gerhard von Schwarzburg , who was also under pressure in his diocese, the exchange of the two dioceses was agreed. Gerhard was therefore still faced with the task of opposing the opposing bishop Albrecht III. enforce. He only succeeded in doing this in 1376.

As Bishop of Naumburg, he was forced to repay his predecessor's debts through pledges and sales.

It is unknown where Withego II was buried. References to the Naumburg Cathedral as a resting place also go back to the Taubesche Chronik of the forger Johann Georg Rauhe.
