Heßberg , historically partly also Hesberg and Hesperg , is the name of a noble Franconian noble family originating in what is now southern Thuringia . The part of the family that once lived in Hesse is still part of the old Hessen knighthood .

history

origin

The family belongs to the Franconian nobility and has its origin in the eponymous place Heßberg near Hildburghausen in Thuringia . The headquarters was the local castle Heßberg . The family only gave up this headquarters through sale in 1859/1860. Carl von Hessberg had the castle demolished around 1817/19 and had a simple new mansion built in its place , and this building came to the Eisenach industrial dynasty of Eichel-Streiber in 1859/1860 . It was demolished in 1948 during the Soviet occupation .

The family is of the same tribe with the barons Marschall called Greiff, who died in the male line . The family and their members are documented in Heßberg 1152 as "homo", 1154 as "liberi", 1229 as "vir nibilis" and on August 1st, 1296 as "domini in Hesseburch". The first named member of the family was Heinrich von Hesberg in 1168.

distribution

The von Heßberg family can also be found in the vicinity of the town of Eisfeld and is associated with Engenstein Castle in the Bibergrund district of Eisfeld , where Heßberger Vogteireche still existed in 1660 . In 1380 Hans von Heßberg was mentioned in a document in Harras , which passed to the related von Heldritt family around 1400 , but the Heßberg family may have built a clearing castle with a permanent house there from around 1250 . The Lords of Heßberg owned the manor in Eishausen from 1363 to 1802 , where a castle was built in 1528; Carl von Heßberg, who had the rear castle rebuilt on the Rodach in 1780, died in 1798 as the last of the ice houses line, and in 1802 the estate was sold.

With Hans von Hesberg, the first offspring of the family came to Hesse at the beginning of the 16th century ; he died in 1533 or 1541 as landgrave Hessian rentmaster in Homberg (Efze) . His grandchildren Johann the Elder von Hesberg († February 2, 1613), Canon at St. Petri Stift in Fritzlar , Johann the Younger von Hesberg, Electorate Mainz Burgmann in Fritzlar, and Heinrich von Hesberg, Chamber Master of Hessen-Kassel and bailiff in Homberg (Efze), received confirmation of their nobility and coat of arms from Emperor Rudolf II on March 25, 1602 .

The Heßbergers were organized as free knights in the knightly canton of Baunach , later in the knightly cantons of Rhön-Werra and Steigerwald (see also the list of Franconian knight families ) and they have also been part of the Knighthood of Althessia since 1820 .
