history

The area around Roßfeld was already settled in the Bronze Age . Later residents were the Celts , the Hermundurs and in the 6th century the Franks . Roßfeld was mentioned for the first time in 1234 in a document about an exchange between the Banz monastery and "Karl von Helderit", which Konrad, mayor of "Rossevelt", signed as a witness. From 1305 at the latest, Roßfeld belonged to the domain of the Henneberger . In 1353 the place with the Coburg Land came by inheritance to the Wettins and was thus part of the Electorate of Saxony from 1485 , from which the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg later emerged. At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War , 68 families lived in Roßfeld, in 1636 there were still 30. The imperial troops under General Count Lamboy were in Roßfeld from October 1634 to May 1635. The number of inhabited houses had decreased from 75 in 1618 to 32 in 1658. The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Roßfeld / Rudelsdorf became an independent parish in 1651. Feudal lords were among others the noble families von Heßberg , von Buttlar zu Heldritt and von Erffa zu Niederlind .

Brewery

In 1784 Roßfeld got a brewing license and a brewery was built. Before it was incorporated into Bad Rodach, a brewery cooperative was founded in 1971, which acquired the brewery. Since then, around 500 hectoliters of beer have been brewed annually for the members.

In 1857 Roßfeld had 417 inhabitants and another 15 who lived in the two mills. A total of 89 families lived in 103 houses. There were also two horses and a foal, 35 oxen, 176 cows, 200 sheep, 276 pigs, 2 boars, 12 goats, 1 billy goat, 300 geese, 2 ducks, 200 pigeons and 300 chickens. Rye, wheat, barley, peas, lentils, vetches and flax were grown. In 1858/59 the community had a new school built. In 1858 a choir was founded and in 1873 the volunteer fire brigade . There was also a community bakehouse.

In a referendum on 30 November 1919 approved seven Roßfelder citizens for the accession of the State of Coburg the Thuringian State and 142 against. From July 1st, 1920 Roßfeld belonged to the Free State of Bavaria . In the Reichstag election on November 6, 1932 , 200 of the 212 eligible voters went to the polls and 161 of them voted for the NSDAP .

From 1920 the Rodach electricity works supplied the place with electricity.

16 Roßfelder lost their lives in World War I and 28 in World War II. On April 10, 1945, after an air raid, a fire destroyed 42 farmsteads. 38 homesteads were damaged and two people died. A new memorial, designed by the Coburg sculptor Willy Krämer, was inaugurated in 1956.

From 1945 to 1989 the inner-German border separated Roßfeld from its neighboring Thuringian villages Streufdorf and Adelhausen . In 1961 a new school house was inaugurated, which was closed in 1968. Since then, the Roßfeld students have been attending elementary school in Bad Rodach.
