List of noble families in Franconia
The list of the high nobility in Franconia provides an overview of formerly high aristocratic families , especially counts and princely houses, which were represented with possessions in the Franconian area before 1806.
Delimitation criteria of the list
The following delimitation criteria apply to the list:
Spatial demarcation
The family has larger estates within the former and also today's Franconia area . Long-established and typically Franconian families should be taken into account, as well as families with a different origin or focus of ownership, so that in Franconia, for example, they only appeared with free float. Noble families established in Franconia are represented in the Franconian Imperial Circle . For other families there are links to Thuringia, Vogtland, Saxony, Bohemia, Bavaria, Swabia, Rhineland and Hesse.
Time limit
The family is in the region before the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.
Demarcation according to stands
The focus of the list is on the nobility. The peculiarity of the Franconian lower nobility lies in its frequent position as an imperial-free knighthood, which is organized in several knight cantons in the Franconian knight circle . Various side lines, also counts and princely houses, also appear under this knighthood. Incidentally, families of the lower aristocracy managed to be elevated to the rank of count or prince. In addition to these common points of contact, there is otherwise a clear demarcation from the list of Frankish knight families . For an overview of family-independent Hochstifte, imperial cities and the Deutschordensballei Franconia see Franconian Reichskreis .
List of noble families in Franconia
While the coats of arms in Scheibler's coat of arms book usually show a simple coat of arms of the families from the 15th century, the coats of arms in Siebmacher's coat of arms from 1605 are often increased .
