Sophia Albertine, Countess of Erbach-Erbach (* July 30, 1683 in Erbach , † September 4, 1742 in Eisfeld ) was by marriage Duchess of Saxony-Hildburghausen . From 1724 to 1728 she was the regent of the small Thuringian state.

Life

Sophia Albertine was the youngest daughter of General Count Georg Ludwig I. von Erbach-Erbach (1643–1693) and his wife, Countess Amalia Katharina von Waldeck-Eisenberg (1640–1697). She married Duke Ernst Friedrich I of Saxony-Hildburghausen on February 4, 1704 in Erbach . Sophia Albertine was responsible for the upbringing of her children, as her husband largely devoted himself to military life outside the country.

After the death of her husband in 1724, Sophia Albertine reigned for her underage son Ernst Friedrich II of Saxony-Hildburghausen . She knew how to reduce the debt burden in the country somewhat through austerity measures. A large part of the court was dismissed and the expensive guard was disbanded. She managed to reduce the number of taxes levied from 16 to 8. While trying to get cash, the valuable ducal library was also sold.

The sale of the office of Schalkau to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen by her husband, who was in financial difficulties, in 1723 was considered illegal. Also under the influence of Prince Joseph Friedrich von Sachsen-Hildburghausen , who was in Hildburghausen at that time, Sophia Albertine Sachsen-Meiningen declared war and had the office of Schalkau occupied by military forces on July 11, 1724. After a city fire in Hildburghausen in 1725, it was able to contribute significantly to the support of those affected.

After her son took over the government, she retired to her Wittumssitz Schloss Eisfeld. The main hall in Hildburghausen Castle was equipped with a parquet in the shape of a star, in the center of which were the initials of the Duchess "SA".

progeny

With her husband Ernst Friedrich she had the following children:
