Schweinfurt (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schweinfurt is the name of an old, late medieval German noble family .

The coat of arms of the city of Schweinfurt probably refers to the aristocratic family, but the tinging that is valid today was not determined until 1773 and is not guaranteed for the Schweinfurters.

origin

The first Margrave Berthold II († 980) was the son of Berthold I († 954) and a grandson of the Bavarian Duke Arnulf the Evil from the Luitpoldinger family . So far it is only certain that the Babenberg Margrave Luitpold I ( Leopold I of Eastern Bavaria ) was a brother or nephew of Berthold. This can only refer to Berthold I, who was previously moved into one person with his son. Berthold I - presumably incorrectly referred to as Graf auf dem Nordgau without mentioning the source - has only appeared as " comes " in 941 , when he was guarding Count Lothar II von Walbeck on behalf of King Otto until 942 . In the following, he did not give the hand of his daughter Eilika to Berthold I, his guard, but to his son Berthold II (marriage 976).

Berthold II. († 980) was count in Radenzgau (960), on the Unteren Naab (961) and in Volkfeld (973) before he became Margrave of Schweinfurt in 976 and married Eilika von Walbeck in the same year . It was he who guarded King Berengar II of Italy in Bamberg in 964 on behalf of Emperor Otto the Great .

A descent from the Popponen is possibly possible through a maternal line. In 1057 the margraves died out. Their lands were inherited by the Counts of Andechs and Andechs- Meranien , as Gisela von Schweinfurt was married to Count Arnold von Dießen ( Diezzen ).

Margraviate Schweinfurt

The county of Schweinfurt was based on possessions in the Nordgau , Radenzgau and Volkfeldgau , which were secured by a chain of castles , which gave the margrave an important position in the central realm. The main castle of the margraves of Schweinfurt was on the Peterstirn , east of today's city.

After the Schweinfurt feud , the county was smashed and left a power vacuum in the region, which the king used to strengthen his influence to found the diocese of Bamberg .
